I have been wanting to try "gels" on my nails for some time now, so I figured my trip to NYC was the perfect excuse. Depending on the brand you use, they are supposed to last for 10-14 days. I tried Harmony Gelish and I was pleasantly surprised.
Between every coat of color and clear coat you put your nails under a UV light for two minutes. At the end of the process, your nails are instantly dry, so much so that the woman rubbed a washcloth with alcohol on them immediately after the process.
It cost an extra $22 to get gels, but so far I have gone 5 days without a chip which makes it worth the extra expense. I have heard some horror stories about getting them taken off, but I don't think that my nails are very delicate so I will update you with how that all goes. For now, I will continue to enjoy my perfect manicure.

Is this the kind of nail you have to fill?
It cost $10 extra for manicure gels and $5 extra for pedicure gels in portland where we went yesterday. Looked like it was a new deal at this particular place. They gave us the pedicure and the manicure at the same time. Thank goodness. We would have been there for days.
I am enjoying them too. My toes are the color of shiny steel and you saw the blood red color of my nails in the picture from Toni yesterday. Toni's will be the acid test. Guitar playing has prevented her from ever keeping paint on her nails. We'll seel. I'll report back.
Are the gels still holding up? Have you figured out how they come off yet?
Mine are still lookin great. Don't know how to get them off yet. The ladies said they come off with nail polish remover. We'll see.
Getting them off is a process. I got them off at the nail salon and they charged me an extra $8! Total rip off. They basically soaked balls of cotton in acetone, then pressed them on my nail, then wrapped my nail in tin foil, then let sit for 3 minutes, then scraped off the polish. It wasnt too bad, my nails didnt look great afterwards, but I got a fresh mani and they are better now.
I would get them again, but it wouldnt be a regular thing, just something I would save for special occasions.
Nail polish remover is acetone. Should be able to do this at home.
Here's my updated gel report. I peeled them all off yesterday. No acetone. This took some of the first layer of my nail off. Then I buffed them out. They look fine. Toni went to the nail salon and they were basically sanded off. Then her nails were buffed out and they look fine now too. So looks like they can be removed by acetone, sanding, or peeling.
