Smoothie Time

As the weather gets warmer, Isaac and I have to start thinking about meals/snacks that don't involve heavy cooking. We do not have air conditioning and we live in the San Fernando Valley in an upper level apartment, which means it can easily get over 110 degrees in our apartment during the summer.

We busted out the blender we got 7 years ago as a wedding present and started using it!

We have mainly been getting our smoothie ingredients at Trader Joe's. We have made several variations incorporating things like frozen strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, mango, pineapple, fresh banana rice milk, Greek yogurt, low fat yogurt, spinach and peanut butter. There really isn't any recipe that I follow, I just throw everything in the blender and it always tastes good.

Here are a few things that I have learned along the way....

  • Try to add your liquid first, this seems to help everything blend together better.
  • We had been adding a little bit of agave nectar to our smoothies to make them a little less sour (some people love sour smoothies)
  • You can add ice if you want but if you are using frozen berries I don't find it to be necessary
  • Drink it with a straw....it just tastes better that way!
